FAQ
What does "IU" stand for?

It used to stands for "Ideas Unlimited", which was the name of the founder's first company, which later changed its name to the "IU Group, Inc." as it expanded over time. IU Group, Inc. has 4 affiliated companies, and this foundation is one of them. "IU" is only an acronym now and has no particular meanings. The activities and programs of the IU Group, Inc. are wholly separate from those of the foundation.

Is it affiliated with Indiana University or Indiana University Foundation?

We have no relationships or affiliations with Indiana University, although we have received scholarship applications from students who are currently enrolled there.

I was born in a foreign country, but my family all moved together, and I became a citizen of a country where I am currently studying at. Am I eligible to apply for the scholarship?

Unfortunately, if you are studying at an institution located in a country of your citizenship now, you are not eligible to apply.

I have a legal permanent residency in a country where I am studying now, but I do not have the international student status or a visa of its kind (F-1 visa, for example, in the U.S.), am I eligible to apply for the scholarship?

Yes, as long as you are not a citizen, you are eligible to apply. We also accept applications from students with a refugee or asylum status.

If I win the scholarship, will I receive the check for the amount of my tuition and stipend?

The tuition portion of the scholarship will be sent directly to the school where you are/will be enrolled. The stipend portion of the scholarship will be given to you either before or after the completion of your study depending on each circumstances, which will be determined on a case-by-case scenario.

I have dual citizenship from country A & B, and I am currently studying (or will be studying) at a qualifying institution located in country A. Am I eligible to apply?

Having a dual citizenship will not make you ineligible for the scholarship, as long as you list your country of citizenship as “B” on the application. However, what really matters eventually is how you make your case in your personal statement that you having a dual citizenship helped you to experience different cultures, and thus qualifies you as the winner of the scholarship.

I am already receiving other scholarships that partially/fully cover my tuition. If I am chosen as a scholarship winner, can I use the tuition part of your scholarship as my stipend?

If those other scholarships partially cover your tuition, the remaining balance of your tuition for that academic year will be paid by our foundation, and the amount of your stipend will not change. If your tuition is fully covered, the question of whether the tuition portion of our scholarship can be transferred to your stipend will be determined on a case-by-case by the decision committee.

It says that the scholarships are awarded as long as the funds for that year have not been exhausted. How do I know when your funds are exhausted for that year, and how do I know whether or not it is too late to apply for this year?

We receive outside donations all year long, which will be used only for the scholarships. However, we generally have a good idea of when our funds for that year have been disbursed, and when we need to stop taking applications for the year. Once that time comes, we will post an announcement on our website that we no longer take applications for this year. Until then, yes, you can still apply.
